Big Day in DC

Nathan and I left home on Tuesday night to head up to DC. I had to wait for the buttons to arrive from UPS before we could leave though. It was worth it. These are AWESOME!! Thank You Kara for creating such a great logo.

Wednesday morning we were up at 5:30am. We wanted to make sure we had enough time to get ready, walk to the metro and then some leeway for the metro ride.

At 8:30am we arrive at Senator Burr's office for a review of the testimony and an update on the proceedings.

The hearing was scheduled for 9:30am so all the Military Spouses head down early. The hearing did start promptly at 9:30am.

From L to R: Rikki Winters, Stephanie Straub, Joanna Williamson, Rebecca Poynter, Karen Francis & Elspeth Moore

After hearing 15 other bills, Military Spouses Residency Relief Act had it's spotlight but not until the Veteran's Affairs Committee heard rebutal testimony first.

Rebecca was asked one question from the committee. Senator Burr asked some questions from the gentleman that gave rebutal testimony. I think the gentleman struggled to answer those questions. You can watch the hearing here.

After the hearing Military Spouses met members from Military Organizations that have also been working on promoting Military Spouses Residency Relief Act; MOAA and NMFA. Anyone who was able to stay for a little while had lunch.

The second half of the day was going to be just as busy. A walk down to the Cannon Building for a 1:15pm meeting scheduled with Congressman Glenn Nye III and his Legislative Director. I called his office on Monday to schedule a meeting to discuss his co-sponsorship but I was told he co-sponsored the bill. I was surprised as his name hasn't shown up on the co-sponsor list. The Congressman invited us into his office and said Thank You for standing up for Military Spouses and Families and for doing what we are doing. I told him Thank You for supporting us and for understanding how important Military Spouse residency is. The Congressman also thanked Nathan for his service.

We then walk back to the Russell Senate Building for a meeting with Senator Warner's Military Fellow. Senator Warner heard about the bill but didn't know the full issue. We gave the NCO Military Fellow a copy of the testimony and the attachment. We discussed with him some of the issues that the bill covered.

After the two meetings, Nathan and I toured DC.

I am asking that you please call your delegates and ask them to co-sponsor S 475 (the bill on the Senate side) and HR 1182 (the bill on the House of Representatives side).

Here is a list of Senators that HAVEN'T co-sponsored the bill yet.
Here is a list of House of Representatives that HAVE co-sponsored the bill.
Here is how to contact your House of Representative.

Healthy as a Teenager

I had my annual checkup and the Doc actually told me I was "as healthy as a teenager." My blood pressure was 98/62, cholesterol was 140, and I scored an outstanding medium on my physical readiness test. It is all downhill from here.
