Free Annual Credit Report

It is that time of year again. Every 6 months I get a free annual credit report. Mid year I check mine, new year the wife gets hers. Everyone should really take advantage of this, and if someone is worried about ID theft or has had problems in the past they can check one of the three agencies every 4 months.

Roadside Assistance

The battery in my truck finally died after 5 years. The poor thing made an awful racket when I tried starting it. The first time it was from the remote car starter while the garage door was going up so I thought the grinding was from the garage door. The 2nd time it scared me because it sounded like something was seriously wrong. So we go back inside and try to decide who to call. We decide on starting with our housings roadside assistance, if they can't help then we can use Rikki's AAA or my USAA for a tow.

Since we are on base we assumed we would have to escort the mechanic on base. We agreed to meet him at pass and tag. Instead we ended up meeting him at the inspection station due to the fact he needed a police escort! Security has changed a lot since 9/11. So we followed the policeman with the mechanic following us back to the house. The mechanic plugged in the portable charger and the truck started up on the 2nd try.

I'm used to older vehicles draining a battery completely and then just not starting, i.e. no power at all. These newer vehicles can still have enough power in the battery to run the lights, power windows, etc. but not enough to turn over the engine. Hence the nasty grinding that I was afraid would be something serious. A few hours later we had a new battery installed. Factory battery lasted over 5 years, not bad.
