New Truck

Classes for API were Aerodynamics, Engines, Navigation, Weather and Federal Rules and Regulations. He finished API September 19th. He got a two-week break before primary flight training started. During this break Nathan took advantage of a Florida Hurricane special and purchased a 2002 Toyota Tacoma. This meant goodbye to the “Red Beast”. Nathan managed to sell the “Red Beast” just before Thanksgiving.

First Hurricane

Tropical Storm Hanna makes Landfall in Mobile, AL. The Pensacola Airport across the street from us reported wind gusts of up to 66 mph at times. Hanna also dropped 4 inches of rain in a 3-hour time span. I remember the parking lot flooding and the tree outside the bedroom window smacking up against it with the strong wind gusts. One death resulted from this storm. A 20-year-old man drowns from the rip currents at the Pensacola Beach.

Movers Arrive

The movers did not arrive until after Nathan had started classes or two and a half weeks after we got to Pensacola. This caused a slight problem. Thank goodness for POAs (Power of Attorney’s). Since the move was set up before Nathan and I were officially husband and wife I needed to have a POA for Personal Property, which was faxed once they called me to let me know the movers were in town and were ready to deliver and one for the delivery guy. Without the POAs our belongings would have been put into storage on base until Nathan and I could go pick it up.

Tricare

Nathan was stationed at NAS Pensacola (Naval Air Station Pensacola) for API or Aviation Pre-flight Indoctrination. He reported July 19th as ordered. API classes however did not start until August 2nd. So during the two week break Nathan registered me for TRICARE Prime. I requested this because TRICARE Prime is like an HMO. While under my parents’ health insurance our provider was an HMO. I know the rules and what I am suppose to do. I was assigned to a doctor at the Naval Hospital located at Corry Station. I was initially afraid to see a military doctor because in my mind I thought a military doctor should deal with military personnel only. But once seeing the doctor and being in the hospital I took note that there were more civilians in the waiting room than there were military personnel. My physician was great and not only told me to call for medical problems but in realizing that I was a new military wife told me to call with any questions. Whether it was for military information or about the town and town events.
There is a pharmacy in the hospital where military and their dependants can pick up there prescriptions for FREE.
We also went and got base stickers for both cars at Pass and Tag. To do this you need your driver’s license, registration and insurance.

Happy 23rd B-day

Happy 23rd birthday! Nathan got me a card and purchased a three-year membership for the Swarovski Collectors Society. Swarovski is a crystal company. Nathan and I have been collecting pieces for the last 3 years. The company is named after Daniel Swarovksi who invented an automatic cutting machine. Swarovski makes figurines, ornaments, jewelry and home decor.

Our First Place

July 16th at about 9:30pm EST Nathan’s “Red Beast” almost broke down. We pulled into a motel once reaching the Alabama border for the evening. Early in the morning Nathan took the car to the mechanic. The left front axle was broken and needed to be repaired. At 11:30am EST we were back on the road. We reached Pensacola, FL at 1:30pm CST. We stopped at Ashley Club Apartments in hopes for finding a one-bedroom apartment; they were not going to have one available for another 2 weeks. We headed to their sister site, Arbor Club Apartments, they had a one-bedroom apartment without washer and dryer hook-up and it was on the second floor. We took it right away. Materials required for renting the one bedroom apartment were current LES (Leave and Earnings Statement), driver’s license and Nathan’s work phone number. The manager did a credit check and we signed a copy of the lease and a military clause.

First Move

On July 15th at 10:30am EST, after the moving company put our belongings into the truck, we left for White River Junction, VT. Once at White River I obtained my military ID by showing my social security card, driver’s and marriage license. Once my military ID was obtained we headed back on the road for Pensacola, FL.

Wedding

Nathan and I exchanged vows July 7th, 2002. That evening, we left for New York for our honeymoon. The Carnival Triumph left port July 8th for St. John’s Bay, Canada and Halifax, Nova Scotia. The ship pulled back into port in New York on July 13th. We drove back to Vermont and spent the next two days saying goodbye to family and packing the rest of our belongings.
